A short video by myrmecostore showing the gruesome aftermath of a Prenolepis mating flight:
I can’t imagine anything more unpleasant than being sucked dry by a crab spider latched to my skull. Other than the same, but simultaneously being assaulted by a sex-crazed drone swarm.
I guess you could never accuse Prenolepis nitens males of being overly picky about their mates.
A personal blog by Illinois-based biologist and photographer Alex Wild.

necrophiliac ants… this is new. nature is beautiful in many ways but this is not one of them haha
No, swarming male ants aren’t very picky. I once observed a hoard of Nylanderia males trying to mate with a female Pheidole! You’d think they would have noticed that she didn’t smell right.
You can almost feel the spider thinking: “What the… Oh come on, now that’s just wrong.”
OMG, this is insane. Wonder if they just aren’t noticing it, or if they notice and try to “get it done” fast enough before she’s done?

I love this except for one thing:
“a sex-crazed drone swarm”
They are not drones! They are not workers, they are not soldiers. They are males. Their whole purpose is to mate once, then die. This irony seems to have been missed, instead there are plenty of clueless and confused reporters spawning titles like “Soldiers can’t resist allure of dying queen” – http://www.news.com.au/technology/sci-tech/soldier-ants-cant-resist-allure-of-their-queen-getting-her-head-eaten-by-a-crab-spider/story-fn5fsgyc-1226311189842

A different kind of food chain! It’s not swarming ant’s male’s faults! Most of arthropods are usually like this. Thanks for sharing the post with snap.
