Atta (leafcutter ants)

Atta comprises the giant leaf-cutting ants of the new world tropics and subtropics.  These ants are farmers- they use freshly cut vegetation to cultivate a fungus in subterranean gardens.  Their leaf-cutting habits make them one of the most economically damaging pest insects in Central and South America.  Colonies are among the most complex insect societies known, and nests can persist for decades and contain over a million individuals.
