Azteca alfari - Cecropia Ants

photograph © Alex Wild 2007

Disturbing a Cecropia tree causes feisty guard ants to rush from the nest entrances and hunt down  intruders. Although Azteca does not have a stinger, the bites of these highly aggressive ants are painful and sufficient to drive away even large vertebrates.
