Labidus praedator - Army Ants
Panamá

photograph © Alex Wild 2007

Army ant columns are often flanked by relatively stationary major workers, jaws agape, ready to rush forward at any sign of danger.  Fortunately for photographers, army ants don't have good vision. We can approach closely if we don't breathe on them.
