Even in the United States, many ant species are still essentially unknown to science. This small army ant was recently discovered and was formally described in 2007 from a couple of collections in southern California. This colony was found under a rock in an open juniper/oak grassland in the Mojave Desert. This image is copyrighted by the photographer and cannot be used without permission.
