Even in the United States, many ant species are still essentially unknown to science. This small army ant is a rare species, still unnamed, known only from a couple of collections in southern California. This colony was found under a rock in an open juniper/oak grassland in the Mojave Desert. This image is copyrighted by the photographer and cannot be used without permission.
