Nomamyrmex esenbeckii - Army Ants
Panamá

photograph © Alex Wild 2007

Nomamyrmex is the most heavily armored of the army ants, and the only species known to attack leafcutter ants.  Their dense cuticle and thick appendages help them withstand the sharp jaws of the leafcutters.
