Nomamyrmex (army ants)

The two species in genus Nomamyrmex are the most heavily armored of the army ants.  Nomamyrmex is found from south Texas to northern Argentina, and like all army ants is nomadic and without permanent nests.  These large, robust insects prey on the brood of other ant species, and they are the only ants that attack mature colonies of Atta leafcutters.
