Cyphomyrmex

Cyphomyrmex are small, cryptic fungus-growing ants.  They are among the most commonly encountered of the smaller attine ants. Cyphomyrmex fungus gardens are unusual in that the fungi do not grow as a white, mycelial mass as they do in most other attine gardens but as a yeast.  Gardens are fed with the feces of Lepidopteran larvae and are often built on a substrate of beetle elytra.
