Formica densiventris
Truckee, California, USA

photograph © Alex Wild 2004

Ants in the Formica microgyna species-group such as this F. densiventris worker are distinguishable from ants of the very similar F. rufa species-group by the shape of the hairs on the mesosomal dorsum.  In microgyna group ants, these hairs are short and thick, often increasing in width towards the tip.
