Ants in the Formica microgyna species-group such as this F. densiventris worker are distinguishable from ants of the very similar F. rufa species-group by the shape of the hairs on the mesosomal dorsum. In microgyna group ants, these hairs are short and thick, often increasing in width towards the tip. This image is copyrighted by the photographer and cannot be used without permission.
