The fusca group is the most diverse and abundant of all the Formica.  They are found nearly everywhere in temperate North America and Eurasia. F. fusca group ants are often the hosts of socially parasitic ants, including Polyergus and Formica sanguinea group slave-raiders and temporary nest founding parasites in the the Formica rufa group.
