Most army ant species are subterranean and not commonly encountered. However, dead army ants often end up discarded in the midden piles of ants whose nests they have attacked, and scientists have learned a great deal about army ant distributions through surveys of ant middens. Here is the carcass of an army ant in the middens of a harvester ant nest.
