Diptera 1: "Nematocera"

The Nematocera are a heterogenous assemblage of  generally midge-like flies.  Some included groups are mosquitoes, black flies, crane flies, no-see-ums, and fungus gnats.  Many lineages are ancient, and since the more morphologically specialized Brachyceran flies evolved from within the Nematocera these flies do not form a natural grouping.
