Pogonomyrmex californicus

Pogonomyrmex californicus is one of the most common ant species in the deserts of  southwestern North America.  They are large, alert seed harvesting ants.  This species varies somewhat in color- these workers have a black gaster, but many P. californicus are a more uniform orange-red color.
