Pogonomyrmex (Ephebomyrmex) pima
Arizona, USA

Pogonomyrmex pima is one of North America's smallest Pogonomyrmex species. Unlike most Pogos, it lacks a psammophore structure that helps desert ants carry sand.  This and related species comprise an ancient lineage that diverged from the more commonly seen harvester ants prior to the evolution of the psammophore.
