Strumigenys

Ornate little Strumigenys ants are specialized predators that use their oddly-shaped mandibles to capture arthropod prey.  The genus contains hundreds of species that show considerable variation in mandible morphology and body sculpture, and often extreme modification of body hairs.  Little is known about the biology of most species.  These ants are common in warmer climates around the world but are not often seen because of their small size, slow movements, and cryptic habits.
