Solenopsis (fire ants, thief ants)

Solenopsis is a large genus with a worldwide distribution. Most of the diversity in Solenopsis is found in small, subterranean species such as S. molesta, pictured below. However, the genus is best known for some of its larger members, the fire ants. Examples of fire ants in this image gallery are S. xyloni, native to North America, and S. saevissima of South America. Several species of fire ants have become economically important pest ants when introduced by human commerce into new areas.
